What is breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, a medical term called reduction mammoplasty, is a surgery to reduce breast size and volume by removing excess fat, tissue, and skin. The procedure is typically performed on women with unevenly large breasts that can cause physical discomfort and emotional distress.
During a breast reduction surgery, the surgeon makes incisions around the areola and on the breast skin to rearrange the skin, tissue and nipple-areolar complex (NAC) to create a more youthful breast. The surgery may result in characteristic scars that improve with time.
Aim of breast reduction
The procedure reduces breast size and changes their shape by removing excess breast tissue and skin. Additionally, breast reduction can also include reducing the size of the areola.

What does it involve?
In breast reduction, the surgeon removes breast tissue to alleviate symptoms related to breast volume, enhance the shape of the breast and reposition the nipple-areola complex (NAC).
The incisions for breast reduction are typically made in one of two patterns: either around the areola and vertically down (known as a vertical scar breast reduction) or around the areola, and then vertically downwards, blending in the fold underneath the breast (known as an anchor-wise pattern breast reduction). The extent of scarring depends on excess skin and tissue removed.
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia with one day hospital admission but can be done as a day surgery depending on what the patient requires.
What to consider during recovery?
When you are having breast reduction surgery or planning to have one, you can keep these pointers about recovery in mind.
- Use specialized dressings and scar tape/gel as instructed; shower carefully.
- Wear the recommended support bra.
- Avoid heavy exertion and lifting for a month.
- Wait 4 weeks before swimming.
- Resume driving cautiously after one week.
- Final shape results may take four months to appear.
- Attend wound check appointments as scheduled.
