Understanding face and Neck lift surgery
A face and neck lift, also known as a rhytidectomy, can help reverse significant indications of facial aging caused by loss of skin elasticity, decreased facial volume, and exposure to environmental factors.
What is Face lift surgery?
A face lift surgery is a cosmetic surgical operation that creates a younger appearance in the face. The technique can help with sagging skin. It can also help to smooth out wrinkles on the cheekbones or jawline.
A flap of skin is pulled back on each side of the face during a facelift procedure. The tissue under the skin is changed, and extra skin is removed. This gives the face a more youthful appearance.
A neck lift is commonly performed as part of a facelift. It lowers fat and sagging skin in the neck. A facelift will not address sun-related damage, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Other cosmetic operations can improve the appearance or condition of the skin itself.
Why consider a Face lift?
The appearance and contour of the face change with age. The skin loosens and does not snap back as easily. Fat deposits diminish in certain parts of the face while increasing in others.
A facelift can correct the following age-related changes:
- Sagging look of cheeks
- Excess skin on the lower jawline
- Deep skin folds from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth.
- Excess fat and sagging skin in the neck (if the operation involves a neck lift)
A facelift is not a treatment for sun damage, fine wrinkles, creases around the nose and upper lip, or uneven skin tone.
What is Neck Lift surgery?
A neck lift is a cosmetic surgery that removes extra skin and fat from the jawline, giving a more defined and chiseled neck. The results can be long-lasting. However, neck lift surgery cannot stop the aging process. Neck lifts are also known as neck rejuvenation treatments.

How to prepare for Neck Lift surgery
Preparing for a surgical procedure involves several key steps to ensure the best possible outcome and a smooth recovery.
It’s essential to follow your surgeon’s specific pre-operative instructions, which may include adjusting your medication regimen, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and fasting for a certain period before surgery.
Additionally, arranging for someone to drive you home and assist you for the first few days post-surgery can significantly enhance your comfort and ease during the recovery phase. The aim is to maintain a stress-free environment that fosters healing and rejuvenation.
The procedures explained
The process starts with a consultation to understand the patient’s aesthetic goals and to outline the expected outcomes. After a detailed consultation and analysis by Dr. Salil the procedure entails:
Neck lift surgery procedure
- Incisions: Small incisions are made behind the ears and possibly under the chin for minimal visibility.
- Fat Removal and Muscle Tightening: Excess fat is either removed or redistributed, and the underlying muscles are tightened to refine the neck’s contour.
- Skin Repositioning: The skin is repositioned over the new contours, creating a smoother, more defined appearance.
- Recovery: Most patients resume normal activities within two weeks, following their surgeon’s post-operative care instructions.
Face lift surgery procedure
- Incision Placement: Incisions are strategically made along the hairline and around the ears to hide any scarring.
- Tissue Repositioning: The surgeon starts with face tightening in which he tightens underlying tissues, repositions deeper layers, and removes excess skin to refine facial contours.
- Closing Incisions: Incisions are meticulously closed to promote healing and minimize scarring.
- Recovery Phase: Recovery time varies, but patients typically return to normal activities within two to three weeks, adhering to post-operative care guidelines for optimal results.
After the procedure
After a face and neck lifts, you may experience:
- Mild to moderate pain
- Drainage from the incisions
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Numbness
Contact your doctor immediately if you have:
- Severe pain on one side of the face or neck within 24 hours of surgery
- Chest pain
- Irregular heartbeats
The incisions will likely be covered with bandages. Bandages provide gentle pressure to minimize swelling and bruising. A small tube might be placed under the skin behind one or both ears to drain excess blood or fluid.
In the first few days after surgery:
- Rest with your head elevated
- Take pain medication as recommended by your doctor
- Apply cool packs to the face to ease pain and reduce swelling
Follow-up appointments
You will have several follow-up appointments scheduled during the next two months after surgery. They will include the following:
- The day after surgery, the surgeon will likely remove the drainage tube. The surgeon will also likely apply antibiotic ointment to the incisions and place new bandages on your face.
- Two to three days after your face-lift, you may be able to switch from wearing bandages to wearing an elasticized facial sling.
- About a week after surgery, your health care provider will remove the stitches and assess the wound.
- Later visits will likely be scheduled to monitor your progress
