Overview
An undesirable belly isn’t exclusive to those approaching middle age or entrenched in the corporate grind. Individuals who’ve shed significant weight through diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery, as well as younger women with multiple pregnancies, may still struggle with protruding stomachs and loose skin even after losing excess weight.
Both men and women aspire to a firm, toned midsection. Yet, the effects of aging, hormonal shifts, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy make it challenging to trim a burgeoning waistline.
Fortunately, contemporary surgical advancements and the expertise of seasoned plastic surgeons like Dr. Salil Bharadwaj offer a solution: Tummy Tuck in Bahrain. This procedure can restore slimness, firmness, and sculpted contours to the abdomen. It can also be complemented by Liposuction and non-surgical treatments to achieve optimal, natural-looking outcomes.
The Concept of Tummy Tuck
Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty), aims to refine and firm the abdominal area, imparting a youthful and taut appearance. The procedure involves eliminating excess skin and fat while addressing any separation in the rectus muscles called a diastasis. Although stretch marks cannot be entirely eradicated, they can be minimized by removing excess skin or relocating them as the remaining skin is pulled downward. To enhance results, liposuction or fat grafts may be integrated into the Tummy Tuck procedure to reshape and contour the stomach.
The extent of scarring and its placement depends on the technique employed; generally, larger skin removal entails a larger scar. Successful abdominal plastic surgery prioritizes the natural positioning of the belly button and strategically positioned scars that are discreet, particularly when wearing swimwear.
Ideal Candidate for Tummy Tuck
A consultation with our plastic surgeon is essential to determine suitability for a tummy tuck in Bahrain.
An ideal candidate should:
- Possess good overall health
- Maintain a stable weight
- Abstain from smoking or commit to quitting before and after the surgery
- Not have plans for future pregnancies
- Maintain realistic expectations regarding the procedure
While the results of a tummy tuck are enduring, fluctuations in weight can influence the long-term outcome. It’s crucial to note that a tummy tuck does not prevent weight gain. Therefore, you need to enhance and maintain your results with a healthy lifestyle.
Various Techniques of Tummy Tuck Surgery
Our surgeon, while determining the most suitable technique for tummy tuck in Bahrain, will go through individual circumstances and consider the amount of excess skin to be removed and the extent of any underlying muscle issues.
He may then accordingly choose any of the following methods:
- Traditional Abdominoplasty – Commonly known as the ‘traditional tummy tuck’, this technique involves an incision made along the bikini line and around the belly button, which is repositioned during the surgery.
- Mini Abdominoplasty – Also referred to as the ‘mini tummy tuck,’, this is a less extensive procedure designed to address minor loose skin below the belly, along with muscle laxity and bulging. A small incision, similar to that of a cesarean section, is made along the bikini line to remove loose skin above, and muscle repair is conducted via a small incision above the belly button.
- Endoscopic Tummy Tuck – This method is a variation of the mini tummy tuck where a small incision is made along the bikini line, and the rectus diastasis muscles are repaired using a tiny telescope inserted through the belly button. This technique offers minimal scarring and a shorter recovery period.
- Lipoabdominoplasty, or ‘LABP’ – LABP combines traditional or mini tummy tuck procedures with 3-D liposuction to flatten the abdomen, eliminate love handles, and contour the waist. Liposuction precedes the tummy tuck to remove excess fat, resulting in a smoother contour once the tissue is repositioned and tightened.
- Reverse Abdominoplasty – This technique is suitable for patients with excess skin above the navel. An incision is made under the breasts to eliminate excess skin and tighten the remaining tissue.
- Circumferential Abdominoplasty – It is typically recommended for patients who have lost significant weight, resulting in excess skin and sagging around the stomach, sides, back, and buttocks. An incision is made around the waistline to remove loose skin and elevate the buttocks.
Procedure for Tummy Tuck
During the procedure day, you’ll be administered general anesthesia to induce sleep, ensuring you are pain-free. The sequence of steps in this tummy reduction surgery varies depending on your surgeon’s chosen technique.
Our surgeon will typically abide by the following course of action:
- Create an incision in your abdominal area, typically positioned between your pubic hairline and belly button.
- Repair any muscle weakness if present.
- Pull down the excess abdominal skin.
- Eliminate surplus skin.
- Realign your belly button as necessary.
- If required, insert drainage tubes to manage excess fluid.
- Close the incision and apply bandages.
Recovery
The outcome starts to be visible in 4-5 weeks and becomes fully apparent within a span of three months, with ongoing improvement in the scar’s appearance for up to one year. Although immediate enhancements are typically visible post-surgery, the results will further refine as swelling subsides over several weeks. Bruising and numbness are common during this time. You may feel a tightness or pulling sensation around your abdomen as you heal. This will go away.
Patients are made to walk the next morning after surgery. Essentially recovery happens in about a week by which time dressings are changed and all drains if present are removed.
Discomfort during the initial week is common, but you should gradually feel more comfortable and return to your usual self in the following weeks.
You’ll wear a supportive abdominal pressure garment for about six weeks after your tummy tuck. This helps prevent fluid buildup and provides abdominal support while you heal. Your doctor will explain how to care for your scar.
Potential Complications and Risks:
- Fluid accumulation beneath the skin (seroma). Drainage tubes left in place after surgery can help reduce the risk of excess fluid. Your doctor might also remove fluid after surgery using a needle and syringe.
- Poor wound healing. Sometimes areas along the incision line heal poorly or begin to separate. You might be given antibiotics during and after surgery to prevent an infection.
- Unexpected scarring. The incision scar from a tummy tuck is permanent, but it's typically placed along the easily hidden bikini line. The length and visibility of the scar varies from person to person.
- Tissue damage. During a tummy tuck, fatty tissue deep within your skin in the abdominal area might get damaged or die. Smoking increases the risk of tissue damage. Depending on the size of the area, tissue might heal on its own or require a surgical touch-up procedure.
- Changes in skin sensation. During a tummy tuck, the repositioning of your abdominal tissues can affect the nerves in the abdominal area, and infrequently, in the upper thighs. You'll likely feel some reduced sensation or numbness. This usually diminishes in the months after the procedure.
Like any other type of major surgery, a tummy tuck poses a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia.
How long do the results of this abdominal plastic surgery last?
Tummy tuck results are enduring and can persist throughout your lifetime. Nevertheless, sustaining these outcomes might necessitate lifestyle adjustments such as following a balanced diet and engaging in regular exercise. Fluctuations in weight can influence the long-term effects. Consulting with a qualified plastic surgeon can assist in maintaining optimal health to preserve your tummy tuck results.
